A series of political posters defaming prominent supporters of Alfred Dreyfus, Musée des Horreurs began appearing weekly following Dreyfus's retrial in late 1899. The series was stopped by order of the French Ministry of the Interior about one year later. Among the subjects caricatured were Dreyfus, novelist Émile Zola, journalist Caroline Rémy Guebhard, and Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), seen here. The founder of the London branch of the banking dynasty that financed England's war against Napoleon, Rothschild is depicted as an avaricious dog, and profiteer who made money on the battlefield of Waterloo over the corpses of patriotic Frenchmen.
