The Moorish revival style reflected in the backplate design of this lamp became popular in European synagogues beginning in the 1830s. The method of mounting the oil containers is characteristic of Austrian lamps. However, this piece is unusual in that the backplate is cast from a repoussé model. The reverse side preserves the dots outlining the decorative element that silversmiths often use when working in repoussé. The lamp was purchased from Gorevic in New York, where Judaica was produced as well as sold. It is therefore possible that the lamp was made by Gorevic.
