A number of eastern European lamps of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had backplates in the form of the Torah arks of local synagogues. Silver examples depict the columns and elaborate openwork scrolls of multistory, carved wooden arks that housed the sacred text. The scroll work often enclosed a veritable Noah’s ark of birds and beasts.
