A plain molding outlines the shape of this shield, a rectangle with arcuated top. Within are two fluted pilasters set off from the background on tall pedestals, which support rampant lions turned towards the center field. Along the axis of the shield, the following elements are arranged contiguous to one another (from bottom to top): the Tablets of the Law (inscribed with the Roman numerals I-X); oval holy day plaques surrounded by a beaded frame and a wreath which extends downward to embrace the Tablets; a menorah with flowering branches; and a crown which projects from the surface to enclose a bell. A bossed semi-circular band connects the center of the crown to the top of the arcade. The following German inscription is engraved on the lower border: "Gestiftet v. Herrn Erich Berghold."("Donated by Erich Berghold".) The Berghold family were prominent mortgage bankers in Danzig.
