Only the inscription reveals its specific purpose: "An Eternal Light for the repose of the perfect, erudite scholar Rabbi Meir Abraham Corcos of blessed memory, who died on 21 Adar [5]688" (March 13, 1928). Meir ben Abraham Corcos was made United States Consul in Essaouria in 1884. He was the author of a two -volume work on the laws of the Sabbath and Passover entitled Ben Me'ir that was published in 1912 and 1925. The glass lamp bears a generalized inscription: "The lamp of the light for the elevation of the soul of the deceased..."
