Many of Leon Golub's figurative works derive from ancient sources, such as his Gigantomachy paintings of 1965-67, which were inspired by the frieze on the Great Altar of Zeus at Pergamum. The heavily impastoed surface of Napalm Man is typical of the carefully rendered textures of many of his paintings, which convey a sense of immediacy and the horror and raw physicality of the subject.
