Appropriating Andy Warhol's style of commodified repetition, Deborah Kass inserts her own (Jewish) stars into the canon of celebrity portraiture. As a Jewish baseball hero, Sandy Koufax was a source of enormous pride to postwar American Jews. At the same time as his stellar pitching for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers challenged the stereotype of the Jewish male as weak or feminine, he proudly proclaimed his faith when he refused to play in the first game of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur.
