Visceral horror and aesthetic pleasure collide in David Levinthal's staged tableaux. The artist manipulates toy soldiers to reenact Nazi atrocities, which he then photographs in rich colors to create his theatrical and horrifying scenes. By using toy soldiers, Levinthal contrasts the innocence of childhood with the evil extreme of human nature. His photographs present a simulated version of the past, reinforcing the fact that history is always subjective and dependent on the biases of the narrator.
