The Habad Hasidic movement, popularly known as Lubavitch, began an unprecedented campaign in the 1940s to bring nonpracticing Jews back into the fold of Orthodoxy. Today, strangers are approached on the street, asked if they are Jewish, and invited to put on tefillin (phylacteries), or given a Sabbath candlestick to light on Friday evening. This Hanukkah lamp was obtained by the donor in such an encounter with a member of the Lubavitch movement.
