David Davis was a sculptor of small-scale works as well as large site-specific pieces; he worked in steel, aluminum, bronze, wood, marble, and stone. Davis started his career as an illustrator and painter, became interested in sculpture when he returned to school for a masters degree, and became a full-time sculptor in 1967. In 1989 Davis and his wife Bernice founded the Sculpture Center in Cleveland for the support of emerging artists.
