The intricately patterned Blue Burst Fan synthesizes painting with items traditionally associated with women, such as fans and needlework, appropriating decorative arts previously shunned by formalist painters. The varied textiles signify Miriam Schapiro's interest in world cultures, manifested in earlier works on the structure of the Japanese kimono and later paintings depicting her Russian Jewish heritage. The shaped canvas was an important feminist strategy to turn painting into object. After returning to New York in 1975, Schapiro helped organize the Pattern and Decoration movement.
