These works highlight the generous donation of numerous studies for Robert Motherwell's mural, Tablets, Ark and Candelabrum, created for the Congregation B'nai Israel synagogue in Millburn, New Jersey. For an artist whose career is based purely upon abstraction, the mural and these studies are the only examples of representational works in his oeuvre.
Two other Jewish Abstract Expressionist artists, Adolph Gottlieb and Herbert Ferber were also commissioned to decorate the interior of this synagogue.
