In the Charred Journal series, Morris Louis evokes the specter of Nazi book burning. The blackened background of Louis's series of seven paintings is reminiscent of burnt paper, from which rise white letters, numbers, symbols, and agitated swirls. Deploying these abstracted forms, he affirms the notion prevalent in the postwar period that abstraction was the only valid approach to represent the horrors of war.
