Zero Mostel (1915-1977) originated the role of Tevye in the Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” and the role of Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks’s film “The Producers.” Equally skilled in comedy and drama, the actor appeared in plays of Moliere, Ionesco, and Brecht. Mostel was quoted as saying that he acted only so he could paint.
