Oks incorporated an abstract interpretation of the backplate of a traditional bench lamp into his piece as he felt it inappropriate to include a decorative panel with narrative content on a late twentieth-century lamp. The artist was inspired by nineteenth-century scientific instruments, and desired to emphasize the involvement of Jews in science and to make the connection between science and faith, mind, and soul. Oks is an architect and created this piece, his first work of Jewish ceremonial art, as a model for a commission.
