Born in South Africa to a mother who survived the Holocaust, Vivienne Koorland became sensitive to injustice at an early age. In her paintings, Koorland gives size and substance to memories she discovered in fragile documents, photographs, stories, and maps. War Drawing (IV) is based on a pencil drawing made by a Polish Christian boy recalling his forced deportation by Soviet troops. The simply painted canvas, framed by a recycled fireplace mantle, preserves a scene of dislocation as a visual monument to the Jewish and feminist need to remember. The work was previously shown in a group exhibition at The Jewish Museum in 1994.
