These elaborate shoes embroidered with metallic thread were worn with a Grand Costume. Such costumes were worn by Moroccan Jewish brides during the henna ceremony that preceded the marriage, and afterwards for religious festivals and special occasions. Documentary photographs taken in the first half of the 20th century show Jewish shoemakers crafting babouches such as these.
