Baron Arnold Abraham Goodman (1913-1995) was a successful solicitor who achieved political power as trusted advisor and confidant to Prime Minister Harold Wilson. A patron of the arts, he served as Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain and Director of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. He also acted as President of the Institute of Jewish Affairs in London.
As painter and draughtsman, Lucian Freud focused on the human figure earning a reputation as a master in the realist tradition. Emphasizing Lord Goodman’s massive neck and head, crosshatched with intricate lines and viewed from below, the artist projects his subject’s strength and vulnerability.
