Photographer Robert Frank captured a group of men during Tashlikh, a ceremony performed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The term is derived from Micah 7:19, "Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."
Frank was one of the sixteen "New York School of Photographers," active from 1936 to 1963, which also included Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Sid Grossman, and Weegee, among others.
