The son of Fradghen Gans Ephraim and Heimann Ephraim Marcus, Jacob changed his family name from Ephraim to Dufresne in 1812. Like many young Jews from elite Berlin families in this period of "crisis," he also converted to Christianity. His portrait exemplifies the process of Jewish acculturation to Berlin society.
