During the latter half of the 1920s Raphael Soyer turned away from his academic training by intentionally flattening forms and space in his seemingly naïve portraits and depictions of family and city life.
Soyer's father, Abraham, was a learned Hebrew scholar who was persecuted and forced to flee Russia. His strong appreciation of the arts made him one of the few of his generation who was supportive of his son's decision to become an artist.
