Painted after Bernstein returned from her first visit to the historic Armory Show of 1913, Self-Portrait shows the influence of the Fauves while confirming the artist’s adherence to an American realistic tradition. With vigorous brushstrokes and earthy tones, the artist portrays herself as a self-confident young woman, but reveals little of her private feelings, reserving such psychological insights for her portraits of other sitters.
The New York realist Theresa Bernstein shared the interest of the early twentieth century Ashcan School painters in depicting urbanites in their everyday environment, expanding their vision to chronicle the activities of working class and immigrant women.
