Taken together, the trees in the series In Praise of a Dream evoke an idealized garden, perhaps the artist’s version of Eden. Such a depiction is at odds with much contemporary landscape photography from Israel, which focuses on social conflict. Shochat instead chooses to stylize these trees, elevating them to mythic, universal symbols of endurance and bounty. Isolating each in front of a pitch-black backdrop, she renders every leaf and fruit with sharp clarity. The trees are thus free from the imperfections of the world and exist as dreams, rather than reality.
