At 3 a.m. on 14 February 1984, policemen with guns roused the 600 inhabitants of Magopa, which the government had declared to be a "Black spot*" and which therefore had to be eliminated. They were forced onto trucks and despatched to Pachgsdraai, 240 kilometers away, in the Bophuthatswana Bantustan. Every one of Magopa's buildings was then bulldozed. The once prosperous farm, which had belonged to this community since 1912, was leased by the state as grazing to White farmers. The sight of his former neighbor's cattle (visible in the background) browsing on Magopa's land, caused Luke Kgatitsoe to remark bitterly, "We don't even share the few cents per head that he pays the government to use our land."

*Black spot: Black-owned property or farm surrounded by White-owned properties or farms.
