This large- scale triptych depicts several praying figures—from left to right, a pair of Ethiopian Jews, a Christian man at the Vatican after the 2005 death of Pope John Paul II, and a Muslim woman in New York just following the attacks on September 11, 2001. By removing the viewfinder from his camera before he took each photograph, Ennadre engaged directly with his subjects. The worshipers emerge from inky backgrounds, enigmatic icons completely absorbed in prayer. In a time of global religious conflict, the artist’s comparison of three spiritual practices emphasizes their human similarities rather than their doctrinal differences, merging into a single portrait of faith.
