The Cochini Jewish bride was heavily bedecked with gold earrings and necklaces that covered her bodice from neck to waist. There was one necklace that was deemed essential for the wedding costume: a tortoise shell and gold necklace such as this example, worn by a prominent member of the Cochini Jewish community. This short necklace was the first strand worn by the bride around her neck.
