This closely cropped photograph conveys the experimental formalism that was practiced at the League even in its early years. Yet Ashjian’s image is infused with social content as well: Epstein’s Clothing was a discount store on the Bowery that survived the Depression by accepting government-relief tickets as payment from customers for new and used clothes.
