The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the World, Harlem’s largest fraternal order, promoted leadership and advancement for the African American community. During the Depression the Elks helped many residents find jobs and affordable housing, and their annual parade was a high point of summer celebrations in Harlem.
