In Max Wineman ("Our friend Max is 93. He was close to my father's father" and "max escaped from the camps and came alone to Galesburg. His wife passed away in 1972"), the photographer sees "a fascinating hybrid identity" where the "work in the end seeks to complicate any stereotype of Jewishness -- yet relies on it as well." Max's life and Verene's visualization of it may make us think about how Jewishness is constituted not only through communal institutions or familial rituals but also individually and alone.
