Ner Mitzvah is a visual embodiment of the 613 mitzvot (commandments) in the Torah that Jews are instructed to observe. While the candles initially appear to have an industrial uniformity, closer inspection reveals that each label bears the text of an individual mitzvah along with symbols that stipulate who is obligated by the commandment (me, women, or both), when and where the commandment applies (the whole world or only in Israel), and the punishment that applies to those who transgress. Dov Abramson's piece suggests connections between the mitzvot at the same time that it cautions against rote religious observance and calls for a more attentive Jewish ritual practice.
