Larry Rivers often included autobiographical references in his work, as in these sketches of mourners at his grandmother's funeral. Loosely based on nineteenth-century French painter Gustave Courbet's Burial at Ornans, in which the grave itself is at the front of the composition, the drawings transform the art-historical reference with a highly personal rumination on family and death.
