The cast workmanship of this lamp is typical of Hanukkah lamps from the same region, but there are only a few known examples of memorial lamps of this kind. The elaborate construction and unusual and finely executed decoration on the underside of the basin make this a rare and important work. Kandils were lit in Moroccan homes in memory of a woman for the first year after her death; they were then dedicated to the synagogue.
