This video sculpture is linked to several traditions related to the biblical prophet Elijah. Late in the Passover seder, families open their doors as a welcoming gesture to Elijah, whose arrival traditionally heralds the messianic era. The video component of Melissa Shiff's piece shows a continuous loop of doors opening onto various New York sites, from lower-class neighborhoods to wealthier parts of Manhattan. Shiff links Elijah with the universal need for hospitality and openness to others. Elijah Chair is one of the works Shiff created for the "Times Square Seder," a public art and social action project at the Chashama Arts Organization in New York.
