This scene of a street in the Jewish Quarter of Montreal was painted during a visit to Canada twelve years after Abraham Manievich had left his native Russia and settled in America. The bright colors and dappled light suggest the lightness and freedom of life in Canada, in marked contrast to the artist's dark paintings of the oppressive life of Jews in Russia.
