Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia, left his native country at age ten and settled in Portland, Oregon. In 1925, he moved to New York, where he studied under Max Weber at the Art Students League, and ten years later became a founding member of The Ten, a group of expressionist artists including Adolph Gottlieb and Ben-Zion. This portrait of his first wife, Edith Sacher, shows a naturalistic and expressionistic approach to the development of his abstract style.
