Not On View
While living on a kibbutz in the 1950s, Malcah Zeldis received her first encouragement to paint from an Israeli artist who praised her work. Not until she returned to New York and studied at Brooklyn College twenty years later - offering her paintings as "life experience" - did her confidence as a self-taught artist emerge and her career start to soar. In her largely autobiographical narratives, Zeldis explores the richness of Jewish culture, personal memories, and contemporary society. The works are distinguished by their brilliant colors, sensuous forms, and richly detailed decorative patterns. Playfully, the artist often inserts her likeness into her paintings, and may appear here on board Noah's Ark.
