Not On View

In its irregular outline, broken contours, and emphasis on shell and scroll ornament, this shield exemplifies the Rococo period. The center of the shield is filled with a diaper pattern framed by scrolls, shells, and flowers. The recessed box with plaques for readings is at the top held between the outstretched paws of two rampant lions. At the bottom is a cartouche inscribed: This was restored b[y] the gabbaim Leib Beckhoven and Azriel Levy from the charity boxes of the h[oly] c[ongregation] of Roedelheim, Thursday, 28 Tammuz [5]521 [1761]...
The original chain and suspension piece in the form of a cartouche are still preserved.
