Clothing from Central Asia is usually specific to a locality. The style of this robe is typical of Samarkand: the outside is formed of two trapezoids on either side of the opening, and the sleeves narrow at the wrist. The lining is a printed cotton bordered in an older ikat silk, probably from a previous garment. Needle woven fabric forms a narrow border along the opening and hem.
The owner of this robe was Rachamim ben Shlomo Aron-Bayor who was born in Samarkand in 1887 and died in Jerusalem in 1968, where he is buried on the Mount of Olives.
