Family portraits were popular during the Biedermeier period, reflecting the elevated social position attained by the growing German bourgeoisie in the early 19th century. This portrait is part of a group of five portraits depicting members of a Frankfurt Jewish family. The son of a Weimar Court Jew, Herz Elias Reiss (1776-1831) married his niece Adelheid, with whom he had three children, Gottfried Reiss, Elizabeth Reiss Schwarzchild, and Henrietta Reiss Levisthal, seen here.
