Lamps such as this example were lit by the woman of the house on the Sabbath and festivals. When the owner passed away, a plaque with her name was often added with a memorial inscription; this lamp memorializes Priha Judith, wife of Shalom Ha-Levi. The lamp would then either be donated to the synagogue in memory of the deceased, or used by successive generations of women in the family.
