To kindle this lamp, oil was placed in the bowl, and the wick, usually made of lax, protruded from the spout, as evidenced by the fire-blackening on the spouts of most lamps. The transition from open bowls with four pinched spouts to those with one folded spout occurred in the early second millennium B.C.E., and this basic form continued with variations in style until the Hellenistic Period.
