Nancy Graves's work, particularly her sculpture of the 1970s, reveals her passion for archaeological objects. The imagery for this graphic came from the artist's study of artifacts in the collection of the Jewish Museum. The figure of the bird in the lower left corner is derived from an early Byzantine mosaic floor tile, while an image of a head of a woman, dating from the 1st century CE, can be seen in the upper left corner. Other objects that inspire this work are an early Byzantine burial plaque, two Greek coins, and an 1874 Omer calendar (used to count the 49 days between Passover and Shavuot).
