John (or Yohanan) I was the hight priest and ruler of Judaea in the second century BCE. He was a member of the Hasmonean dynasty that liberated the Jews of ancient Israel from Greek Seleucid rule. The coin depicts a double cornucopia; between the horns is a pomegranate, one of the “first fruits” brought to the Temple as offerings.
