These round embroidered textiles were used by the Jews of Irani Kurdistan to cover the trays that served as dining tables during ceremonial and festive meals. This example bears an inscription stating that it was written by a woman "for her beloved" Ephraim son of Aaron. It was probably created for the exchange of presents and food, placed on large brass trays, between the engaged couples. Such tray covers were then used for holidays and special occasions.
