Prayer shawl bags were given to young men at the age of thirteen when they became bar mitzvah and wore a prayer shawl for the first time. Examples with ajouré plaques suggest the wealth of their owners. That this tallit bag was made in Meknes is indicated by the name of the city inscribed on the Star of David at the center. The cutout inscriptions include quotations from the Bible on the back, and the name of the owner, Simon, son of Mahluf Coriat, on the front.
