Several lamps of this type exist, evincing a mixture of styles and periods. The backplate's neoclassical design and fine casting are typical of Italy in the 1820s, and it could have been part of any number of secular decorative arts works. The oil containers are eastern European in shape, while the side pieces, consisting of rampant lions, are medieval in style.
