Sam Mahl

Mahl studied at several art and trade schools in New York, notably the Art Students League. His training led him to design work for New York department stores, first as an associate display director and then as a graphic-arts director. Mahl joined the Photo League in 1947. He participated in the exhibition "This Is the Photo League" (1948–49) and attended a class taught by Paul Strand that produced The New Ghetto (1949), a photographic essay documenting the Knickerbocker Village area on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He remained a League member until 1951. Mahl exhibited in group shows both in the United States and abroad, later becoming an art dealer specializing in nonwestern art (1975–92).
