John Ebstel
American, 1922-2000
Born 1922, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Died 2000, New York
John Ebstel was both a painter and a photographer. In the 1930s he worked as a photographer for the Works Progress Administration, making photographs for the Philadelphia Housing Authority. In 1943 he moved to New York and joined the Photo League. Ebstel taught the basic technique course (1947–50) and also briefly served as director of the League's school (July–August 1945). In addition to serving on League committees, he led a Photo Production Group (1945) and participated in several group exhibitions. He later worked for Louis Kahn as an architectural photographer. He married Jeanne Friedberg Ebstel, a fellow photographer and League member, in 1947. The Ebstels, lifelong progressives, were founding members of the Hillman Houses cooperative housing project on New York's Lower East Side, built by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers union, where they lived beginning in 1949.
